HTML

HTML stands for the HyperText Markup Language. HTML code is the major language of the Internet's World Wide Web. web sites and web pages are written in HTML code. with HTML code and the WWW, you have the ability to bring together text, pictures, sounds, and links... all in one place! HTML code files are plain text files, so they can be composed and edited on any type of computer... Windows, Mac, UNIX, whatever.

DHTML

DHTML stands for Dynamic Hyper Text Markup Language (usually referred to as Dynamic HTML). DHTML is a client-side scripting language and it is a very powerful tool that allows web builders do wonders with their web sites. DHTML is also made up of various technologies such as CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and the Document Object Model (DOM).

unfortunately though, DHTML is not used widely for one important reason - not all browsers support it (3.0 browsers for example). since there are still a lot of people using 3.0 browsers, web developers and designers have no choice but to refrain from using this fluent and interestingly dynamic Markup Language.

ASP

Active Server Pages (ASPs) are web pages that contain server-side scripts in addition to the usual mixture of text and HTML tags. server-side scripts are special commands you put in web pages that are processed before the pages are sent from your Personal Web Server to the Web Browser of someone who's visiting your website. when you type a URL into the address box or click a link on a web page, you're asking a web server on a computer somewhere to send a file to your web browser (sometimes called the "client") on your computer. if that file is a normal HTML file, it looks exactly the same when your Web browser receives it as it did before the web server sent it. after receiving the file, your web browser displays its contents as a combination of text, images, and sounds. in the case of an Active Server Page, the process is similar, except there's an extra processing step that takes place just before the web server sends the file. Before the web server sends the Active Server Page to the web browser, it runs all server-side scripts contained in the page. some of these scripts display the current date, time, and other information. others process information the user has just typed into a form, such as a page in the website's guestbook.

PHP

PHP is a server-side scripting language for creating dynamic web pages. the programming syntax is very similar to Perl but is much easier than comparable Perl or ASP to learn. PHP supports the most common databases like MySQL Sybase or Oracle and you can integrate external libraries to generate PDF documents or for parsing XML. it is an open-source language which is supported by groups of developers.

JavaScripts

JavaScript is a scripting language developed by Netscape to enable web authors to design interactive sites. although it shares many of the features and structures of the full Java language, it was developed independently.

Javascript can interact with HTML source code, enabling web authors to spice up their sites with dynamic content. JavaScript is endorsed by a number of software companies and is an open language that anyone can use without purchasing a license. It is supported by recent browsers from Netscape and Microsoft, though Internet Explorer supports only a subset, which Microsoft calls Jscript.

CSS [Cascading Style Sheets]

CSS, short for Cascading Style Sheets, a new feature being added to HTML that gives both Web site developers and users more control over how pages are displayed. With CSS, designers and users can create style sheets that define how different elements, such as headers and links, appear. These Style Sheets can then be applied to any Web page.

Cascading Style Sheet provides the ability to separate the layout and styles of a web page from the data or information. Styles such as fonts, font sizes, margins, can be specified in one place, then the Web pages feed off this one master list, with the styles cascading throughout the page or an entire site.

Flash Shockwave movie

Macromedia Flash is a tool for creating interactive and animated Web sites. Flash is a multimedia graphics program especially for use on the internet. Flash enables you to create interactive movies on the internet and on CD. Flash uses vector graphics, which means that the graphics can be scaled to any size without losing clarity/quality. You can import vector graphics from illustrator 0.6 into Flash. although you can import virtually any media content into Flash, such as 3D, video and music files; image files like JPEG, animated GIF, PNG do not have scaling quality. animated images and Java applets are often used to create dynamic effects on Web pages. the advantages of Flash [Shockwave movies] are: Flash loads much faster than animated images and Flash allows interactivity, animated images do not.

Note that the plugin to play Flash is free and it can be downloaded from the Macromedia site

Flash ActionScripts

ActionScript is the scripting language of Macromedia Flash. a scripting language is a way to communicate with a program; you can use it to tell Flash what to do and to ask Flash what is happening as a movie runs.

ActionScript is an ECMAScript-based programming language used for controlling Macromedia Flash movies and applications. since both ActionScript and JavaScript are based on the same ECMAScript syntax, the client model is dramatically different: while JavaScript deals with windows, documents and forms, ActionScript deals with movie-clips, text fields and sounds.

Forms

HTML forms were the first technology that allowed a user to interact with the web. until today, they remain the most fundamental way to achieve this interaction.

common uses of forms are for surveys, on-line order forms, feedback, or really any web page in which input is required from the user in order to accomplish a given task or provide a service to the user.

AUDIO FILE TYPES: MP3, WAV

popular sound file formats these days include .MP3 for both Mac and PCs and .WMA for the PC. other file formats include .AIFF for Mac; .AU for Mac and UNIX; .WAV for the PC; and .RA for Real Audio, a proprietary system for delivering and playing streaming audio on the internet.

VIDEO FILE TYPES: QuickTime

for video, popular extensions are .AVI and .RAM for the PC, .MPG (short for MPEG), which is platform-independent, but requires its own player, and .MOV and .QT for QuickTime movies. QuickTime was initially developed just for the Macintosh, but now plays on Windows and UNIX, too.

WEB IMAGE FILE TYPES:

the most common graphics file formats on the Web are those with the extensions .jpg and .gif.

JPG

is short for JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group), which is a popular compression standard for photographs and other images.

GIF

extension stands for Graphics Interchange Format, a standard developed by CompuServe in the late 1980s. both these graphics formats are platform-independent, which means you can use them on a PC, Mac or UNIX.

PNG

(Portable Network Graphics) is a graphics format specifically designed for use on the World Wide Web. PNG enable compression of images without any loss of quality, including high-resolution images.

BMP

(bitmap) the standard graphics file format on Windows-compatible computers. Bitmap graphics support 24-bit color and can be saved for Windows or OS/2 systems.

WBMP

is a graphic format optimized for mobile computing devices. A WBMP file defined is a simple black-and-white image file with one bit per pixel and no compression.

TEMPLATE FILE TYPES:

PSD

(Adobe Photoshop format) is the only format supporting all available image modes (Bitmap, Grayscale, Duotone, Indexed Color, RGB, CMYK, Lab, and Multichannel), guides, alpha channels, spot channels, and layers.

PNG

(Macromedia Fireworks format) create, edit, and animate Web graphics using a complete set of bitmap and vector tools. use export controls to optimize your images, give them advanced interactivity, and export them into other HTML editors. allowing you to launch and edit Fireworks graphics from inside Dreamweaver or Macromedia Flash.

Ai and EPS

formats, see what is 'vector shape graphics' below.

VECTOR SHAPE GRAPHICS

vector graphics is the creation of digital images through a sequence of commands or mathematical statements that place lines and shapes in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space.

one advantage of vector graphics over bitmap graphics (or raster graphics) is that they makes it possible to change any element of the picture at any time since each element is stored as an independent object.

another advantage of vector graphics is that the resulting image file is typically smaller than a bitmap file containing the same image. examples of vector-image file types are PDF, Adobe illustrator Ai, and Flash vector shape graphics.

FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is how you transfer your website pages from your computer to the host computer (sever).

WEB SERVER

a website server is a computer specially programmed to serve files requested by clients. this computer is permanently connected to the internet and all web pages are held on servers. when you are connected to the internet with your own computer you are the client that sends the request to the web server which returns your request back to your browser.

CGI

the CGI (Common Gateway Interface) is the standard by which external programs can interface with a HTTP web server.

CGI programs can be designed to handle an information request to a database, take the results and assemble an HTML document and return this document to your browser.

common Gateway interface are used to provide things like counters, response forms, guest books, and many other things. hosting your site with Design On Line gives you full CGI access for no extra charge You can write your own scripts, install the Free Scripts that you can find on the web, or use one of our preinstalled CGI scripts provided by your domain host.

MySQL

MySQL is a database management system and a database is a structured collection of data. it may be anything from a list of products on your site or the large amounts of information in a corporate network. to add, access, and process data stored in a computer database, you need a database management system. Since computers are very good at handling large amounts of data, database management plays a central role in computing, as stand-alone utilities, or as parts of other applications.

MySQL is a very fast, multi-threaded, multi-user, and robust Structured Query Language database server. it is is a relational database management system which stores data in separate tables rather than putting all the data in one big storeroom which adds speed and flexibility. the tables are linked by defined relations making it possible to combine data from several tables on request.

Hit Counter

a computer program that uses an image or hidden file to count the number of hits/visits to a web page.

Favicon

favicon.ico is a small icon that some browsers display next to a bookmark when the site is viewed. sometimes, it's useful to display corporate logos on websites in this way.

favicon (short for "favorites icon"), also known as a page icon, is an icon associated with a particular website or web page. many web browsers—such as recent versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, Safari, Avant and Konqueror—can then make use of them. browsers that support favicons may display them in the browser's address bar, next to the site's name in lists of bookmarks.

XHTML

XHTML is the next generation of HTML and is a hybrid between HTML and XML. XML was designed to describe data. HTML was designed to display data. XHTML is much stricter than HTML. Not all browers support XML so XHTML provides an intermediary soluton and can be interpreted by XML and HTML browsers.

XML

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a standard for creating markup languages which describe the structure of data. It is not a fixed set of elements like HTML, but rather, it is like SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) in that it is a metalanguage, or a language for describing languages. XML enables authors to define their own tags. XML is a formal specification of the World Wide Web Consortium.
